The Rainbow Range of Palcoyo is often considered the sister of the famous Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain — but with much easier access. Its more than 9,000 hectares of naturally colored mountains resemble a rainbow, creating a joyful yet mystical atmosphere.

In this tour, you’ll not only admire this stunning geological formation, but also visit other unique sites that make the journey unforgettable.

Once again, the nature surrounding the city of Cusco reveals another remarkable natural wonder: the Rainbow Range of Palcoyo, where you’ll enjoy the region’s beauty, vibrant colors, and a wide variety of flora and fauna.

This destination is relatively new, and even many locals had never heard of the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain because it was previously covered in snow. However, due to climate change, the snow has receded, unveiling its incredible natural colors.

Itinerary
Cusco – Checacupe – Raqchi – Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain – Four Lakes – Cusco

We will pick you up from your hotel between 4:45 and 5:00 AM and head south from Cusco on a 2-hour journey to the town of Checacupe, arriving around 8:30 AM.

In Checacupe, you’ll witness the evolution of Andean roads through three historic bridges: the Inca Bridge, the Colonial Bridge, and the Republican Bridge. You’ll also visit a beautiful colonial church known for its finely carved woodwork, gold leaf details, and Cusco School paintings (Diego Quispe Tito).

After this visit, we continue to Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain, located at an altitude of 4,900 meters above sea level. Upon arrival, we begin a gentle 40-minute hike through a landscape of eroded glaciers, brilliant permian rock formations, and valleys where llamas and alpacas roam freely.

You’ll also see small farming communities, the Stone Forest of Ccacca Loma, and the striking Red Mountain. After taking in this magical scenery, we head to Raqchi, the Temple of the God Wiracocha.

In Raqchi, you’ll explore over 151 colcas (storage structures) once used to hold corn, quinoa, potatoes, dried fish, and alpaca meat for ceremonial use. The highlight here is the massive Temple of Wiracocha, a two-story structure measuring 92 meters long by 25.5 meters wide, with a central adobe wall over 18 meters high, flanked by rows of circular stone-and-adobe columns.

After the visit, we continue to San Pedro to enjoy a delicious buffet lunch.

Following lunch, we explore the beautiful Four Lakes Circuit, where you’ll see Acopia, Pomacanchi, Posposqo Cocha, and Misky Cocha. This natural area is ideal for birdwatching and enjoying peaceful highland landscapes.

After this full and scenic day, we return to Cusco, arriving at approximately 5:00 PM.
