Once again, the Cusco region surprises us with a new wonder hidden in its vast territory. Waqra Pukara is a mysterious archaeological site of classic Inca architecture, perched at 4,300 meters above sea level on the cliffs of the Apurímac Canyon, south of Cusco.

Was it a fortress, a sanctuary, or an astronomical observatory? These are just a few of the interpretations of this enigmatic monument.

The name “Waqra Pukara” comes from the Quechua words waqra (horn) and pukara (fortress), often translated as “Fortress of the Horns”. However, local villagers suggest an alternative interpretation: the twin peaks resemble the ears of a llama, always alert and attentive, leading them to call it “Llamapukara.”

The stone terraces curve like arms holding the central structure, which resembles a double-peaked crown. In the middle lies a natural cave with Inca modifications and a small window overlooking the abyss — offering breathtaking views of the night sky, rich in stars, planets, and constellations that were deeply meaningful in the Inca worldview.

Waqra Pukara stands atop a dramatic gorge surrounded by ancient terraces, plazas, and a forest of stone formations that resemble thrones and mythological figures watching over the Andes.

The site is accessible by a hike of about 1.5 hours, rated moderate in difficulty. The effort is well worth it to experience one of the most striking and lesser-known gems of Inca architecture. The area is also suitable for mountain biking, offering a unique way to explore its natural beauty.
