This 3-day trek is a condensed version of the Ausangate adventure, designed for those seeking dramatic mountain landscapes, colorful high-altitude lakes, and close encounters with Andean culture—all within a shorter time frame. The final highlight of the trek is Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), a natural marvel known for its vibrant, mineral-rich layers that paint the slope in reds, yellows, and turquoises. Arriving early allows you to enjoy the landscape with fewer crowds and dramatic lighting. This is an ideal trek for adventurous travelers short on time but eager to experience the best of Peru’s high Andes.

Day 1 – Cusco – Tinki – Upis

Early in the morning at 5:30 AM, we will pick you up from your hotel and drive along the Interoceanic Highway for 3 hours to the town of Tinki, and then one more hour to the community of Pacchanta. Here we can enjoy the hot springs and have lunch. We will meet our horsemen, then begin the trek with a light uphill hike of about 1 hour across puna grasslands. From here, we’ll already have stunning views of the Apu Ausangate (6,372 m).

After approximately 3 hours of trekking, we arrive at our campsite in Upis (4,400 m), right in front of the majestic Ausangate Mountain. Overnight in tents.

Day 2 – Upis – Arapa Pass – Pucacocha – Hanantapata

After breakfast, we begin the day with a 2-hour ascent to Arapa Pass (4,850 m). From here, we descend for 1 hour to reach the beautiful Pucacocha Lagoon, where we’ll have lunch. After lunch, we continue with a long, gradual uphill hike of around 2 hours to reach the Apuchata Pass (4,900 m / 16,072 ft).

We then descend for 2 hours to our campsite in Hanantapata (4,440 m), surrounded by mountains and grazing alpacas, llamas, and sheep. After a breathtaking trekking day, we enjoy dinner at 6:30 PM and rest early to be ready for an early visit to Rainbow Mountain the next morning.

Day 3 – Hanantapata – Rainbow Mountain – Cusco

After breakfast, we begin a 2-hour ascent to our main objective: Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca). Along the way, we’ll enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and the Ausangate Glacier, as well as llamas and alpacas in their natural environment.

After taking plenty of time to enjoy and photograph the colorful landscape, we return to camp and descend for about 2 hours to the village of Quesiuno, where our private transport awaits. We’ll have lunch there and begin the drive back to Cusco, arriving around 6:00 PM.

The “Ausangate & Rainbow Mountain 3 Days” tour was an unforgettable adventure filled with breathtaking landscapes and challenging hikes. The beauty of Ausangate’s snow-capped peaks and the vibrant colors of Rainbow Mountain blew me away. The trek was tough but the views and cultural encounters along the way made every step worth it.
