FAQ'S
Moray

Located 7 km from Maras and about one hour from Cusco via the Chinchero route, Moray is one of the most spectacular sites in the region.
It features a system of circular agricultural terraces of varying depths and sizes, believed to have been used by the Incas as a sophisticated agricultural experimentation center.
Moray is also considered a site of feminine energy and is regarded by many as a magnetic center of Pachamama (Mother Earth).

Maras Salt Mines (Salineras de Maras)

Located northwest of the town of Maras, these salt mines — often referred to as “salt pans” or “salt pools” — consist of around 3,000 small evaporation ponds.
Salt has been extracted here since pre-Inca times through a traditional process: saltwater flows from an underground stream and is left to evaporate in the sun. Once dried, the salt is ready for harvest and sale.
The white terraces carved into the mountain create a breathtaking and surreal landscape.

Chinchero Artisan Market

Situated 28 km from Cusco on the paved road to Urubamba, Chinchero was once the royal estate of Túpac Inca Yupanqui.
Today, it is known for its beautiful colonial church built on top of Inca foundations, but its main attraction is the artisan market.
Originally a place for bartering agricultural products between valley and highland communities, the market is now a vibrant display of color, tradition, and craftsmanship.
It offers handmade textiles and crafts in pure pre-Columbian style, making it a favorite spot for visitors to purchase authentic souvenirs.

Itinerary
Maras, Moray & Chinchero Half-Day Tour

At 8:30 AM, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and begin our journey to the town of Maras and the agricultural terraces of Moray. It is believed that the Incas used this site to create microclimates for adapting plants, flowers, and crops from various regions of the Inca Empire.

We then continue to the Maras Salt Mines, located just below the town. These ancient salt ponds are still in operation, and local farmers harvest the salt using traditional methods.

On the way back to Cusco, we stop in Chinchero to visit its colonial church and famous artisan market. Here, you’ll also enjoy a demonstration of traditional natural wool dyeing using native plants, seeds, and minerals.
