During Inca times, an extensive network of roads known as the Qhapaq Ñan connected the vast territories of the empire. To traverse the rugged Andean terrain, they built suspension bridges made from braided plant fibers — a remarkable technology passed down from generation to generation.

One such bridge still stands today, maintained through an ancestral ritual that has lasted over 500 years. Located at 3,700 meters above sea level over the Apurímac River, the Q’eswachaka Bridge is the last remaining Inca suspension bridge.

Each year, over 1,000 people from four surrounding communities come together to rebuild the bridge entirely by hand, using traditional materials and techniques. This ancient tradition was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2013.

Crossing this bridge is not just an adventure — it’s like stepping back in time and experiencing a living piece of Inca history.

Discover the Last Inca Bridge – Q’eswachaka

Q’eswachaka is the last remaining Inca bridge still preserved and in use after more than 500 years. Spanning the Apurímac River, this bridge is regularly visited by locals and travelers alike. Among the many tours available from Cusco, the Q’eswachaka excursion is one of the most unique, as it offers a direct connection to living Inca tradition.

Each year, four local communities gather to completely rebuild the bridge using traditional techniques and braided plant fibers. This ancestral ritual was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2013.
